A

Packs are available from 365 Healthcare which
support Urinary catheterisation this is intervention to
enable emptying of the
bladder by insertion of a catheter.
Our
customized packs for this procedure should limit infection
and provide all the components needed to carry out the procedure.
When
considering catheterisation for stubborn incontinence, this
intervention is
only considered after all other non-invasive management
options have been
explored and found to be unsatisfactory.
The
intervention is performed by healthcare staff including
acute care, primary
care and long-term care. General principles of catheterisation
and infection
control apply to all patient groups; however, some patient
groups will have
particular needs, eg children and patients with spinal injuries.
Staff working with
these groups of patients will familiarise themselves with
their unique needs.
Recent
literature has indicated that considerable variation exists
between
hospitals in the proportion of patients catheterised in
different specialties.
Glynn
et al (1997) found the overall rate of catheterisation in
acute care
was 26.3%, with a range of 12-40% dependent on specialty.
The
duration of catheterisation is also variable within healthcare
settings and is
often related to the reason for catheterisation. E.g.
• Short duration (1-7 days) for postoperative patients
• Intermediate duration (7-30 days) for the measurement
of urine output in critically ill patients
• Long duration (more than 30 days) for those patients
with complications
related to intractable incontinence or those with intractable
incomplete
emptying of the bladder.
